The ammonium ions to be tested migrate through the selective membrane. The migration process will cause a change in charge and generate a potential on the working electrode. The potential is proportional to the ion concentration. The potential of the reference electrode remains constant. The controller converts the potential difference between the working electrode and the reference electrode into the ammonia nitrogen concentration through calculation.
